I am always on the lookout for new and innovative flood mitigation products to offer my clients, as part of my consultancy. These products have to add significant value to my proposition and be insurable.

The Flood Adaptive Platform (FAP) does exactly that and has many applications where raising the property above the flood elevation is the desired outcome, and when raising it permanently is not an option.

…is suited to any building type (including critical infrastructure), but the video below shows an ideal use case for static/mobile homes.

The platform rises automatically on the incoming flood waters, but it can also be raised manually for added peace of mind and regular maintenance routines.

The FAP is a good, cost effective alternative to buy-back schemes that can rip the heart out of a community.

FAP is an excellent way of preventing ground floor infill of raised properties that simply re-establishes the initial problem.

Twelve years in the making, the multi-purpose Flood Adaptive Platform is a ground breaking mechanical jack system that’s designed to detect and react to flood conditions by automatically elevating above the rising water.

Rigorous testing in flood environments, in conjunction with the University of Liverpool and HR Wallingford in the UK, has confirmed that it’s safe and highly effective.

This technology has already been successfully applied to modular buildings and mobile homes, highlighting its ability to protect people and their property from the threat of flooding, but its potential is limitless. It can be used to protect a vast range of infrastructure across many different sectors, from utilities and energy to commercial and transportation.

Research shows that the Flood Adaptive Platform costs 40 per cent less to install, operate, and maintain than other comparable methods of flood risk mitigation, including flotation-based systems.

By adopting a low-carbon, off-site approach to its assembly, the greenhouse gas emissions from manufacturing, operating and maintaining the Flood Adaptive Platform are up to 95 per cent lower than those from comparable methods of flood risk mitigation.

How much does the platform cost? 

This depends on the size, weight, location and type of structure that’s being lifted. Where possible, we aim to keep the cost of The Flood Adaptive Platform to less than 10 per cent of the value of the asset that’s being lifted. Based on research commissioned by the Flood Technology Group, The Flood Adaptive Platform costs 40 per cent less to install, operate and maintain than other comparable methods of flood risk mitigation.

The FAP can be adjusted for any application using “digital twin” technology to prove the new design before fabrication of a custom platform. Sensors are used that trigger the motors to raise the property above the incoming floodwater, and forewarn the occupants of the event.

At present the FAP can rise 2m above ground level at the rate of 55mm per minute. There is scope to increase the height, if required, and the gearing ratios on the jacks can be adjusted to increase the rate of the rise too.

The innovation in this platform can be used in a range of applications where permanently raising the property is not an option, in retrofit as well as new developments, and probably at a fraction of the cost.
