About John Alexander
Independent resilience advisor with 15 years of international experience helping organisations achieve practical and insurable outcomes.
Organisations facing resilience challenges are often presented with competing products, conflicting advice and significant uncertainty about where to invest.
My role is to help clients make informed decisions based on practical experience, proven approaches and a clear understanding of what works in the real world.
Over the past 15 years, I have worked across the United Kingdom and Australia developing, evaluating and implementing resilience solutions for homes, businesses, communities, insurers and public sector organisations.
Unlike many consultants, my experience spans the full lifecycle of resilience improvement, from innovation and product development through to implementation, recovery and long-term adaptation.
Today, I help organisations identify practical pathways to reduce risk, improve recovery outcomes and invest with greater confidence.
Experience Beyond Traditional Consulting
My career began by solving real-world resilience problems rather than producing reports about them.
In 2010, I developed and patented the world’s first residential flood door, helping establish a new approach to property-level flood protection. Over the following years, I supported the deployment of more than 2,000 resilience installations across the UK and worked with property owners, insurers, contractors, researchers and government stakeholders to understand what drives successful resilience outcomes.
This practical experience provided an important insight:
The challenge is rarely a lack of solutions. The challenge is identifying the right solution, implementing it effectively and ensuring it delivers long-term value.
International Perspective. Independent Advice.
Having worked across multiple markets, I have seen resilience initiatives succeed, fail, stall in procurement, struggle during implementation and thrive when stakeholders are aligned.
This experience allows me to help organisations avoid common mistakes and make decisions based on evidence rather than assumptions.
My advice is independent and outcome focused. I am not tied to a single product, contractor or technology provider. Instead, I help clients evaluate options, understand trade-offs and select approaches that best fit their objectives, constraints and operating environment.

My Approach
I do not see resilience as a product.
I see it as a decision-making challenge.
Successful resilience outcomes depend on selecting the right solution, engaging the right stakeholders, understanding implementation constraints and creating practical pathways to adoption.
My role is to bring together international experience, independent judgement and practical implementation knowledge to help organisations make better resilience decisions and achieve lasting outcomes
I have worked with John for many years from developing best practice standards through to both design and implementation of simple and strategic flood protection projects.
John has always ensured that the customer need is delivered which was best demonstrated when we worked on a significant project adjacent to an estuary which encompassed significant ground works across the site, protection to critical buildings however also understanding what areas the client would be willing to leave unprotected and how that impacted the overall strategic plan
Following his introductions to us in this specialised field, John was able to quickly and expertly identify the most suitable flood protection strategy for the Anglers Tavern following the 2022 floods. After developing these plans, he was subsequently able to navigate our team through what was a highly specialised journey, providing expert advice through the on-site installation and off-site fabrication phases.
We look forward to partnering with John on any upcoming flood protection requirements across our national portfolio of venues, and provide our recommendations towards his engagement on any flood protection related matters.
We have now installed all of the flood defence measures that were recommended by you when you prepared a consulting report whilst at Aquobex. I am very pleased to report that they are totally effective.
Since installing the flood barriers, organising annual dry runs and sharing our FERP with insurers, both the landlord and tenant insurance policies have been broadened, and limits have increased.
For instance, the landlord was denied insurance for many years; we now have a coverage solution as a result of the flood mitigation practices in place.
